The Institute was established in 1997 from the union of five pre-existing schools located in three different small towns, Budrio, Medicina and Molinella, just outside the city of Bologna, which are up to 25 km away from each other. The different schools belonging to the Giordano Bruno Institute, Liceo, Technical and Vocational Secondary Schools, allow students to major in different fields: Electronics and Automation, Mechanics, Humanities and Social Sciences, Applied Sciences, Accounting and Business Science. The students’ overall number is around 1,300.

The entire professional community of around 140 teachers is involved in the ongoing reform processes affecting the Italian school, which tend towards innovation in teaching practices through the valorisation of customised learning methods for individualised teaching methodologies such as problem solving, research, exploration and discovery, collaborative learning and metacognitive approaches and teaching by skills and by subject areas.
